Had Les Miserables been a mixture of spoken dialogue and song, as in more common musicals, I do not believe it would have been as successful in arousing the emotions necessary to let the audience properly experience the character’s loss, sacrifice, and redemtion.

In my opinion, though, the constant song is what makes the movie so special. For the unsuspecting viewer, the constant singing in lieu of spoken words may be unexpected and possibly somewhat off-putting, as this is not typical of the average musical.
